In the form of a modular kit this contains all the components required for the efficient and effective development of the latest generation of web applications, so called Rich Internet Applications (RIA).
With its unique functional scope the suite provides both enterprises and software producers tools for generating high performance, highly interactive RIAs deployable with a minimum of effort and without the need for installation.

As opposed to most RIA toolkits available today, the Canoo RIA Suite is optimised towards the performance requirements of business applications. Rich Internet Applications versprechen, die Lücken zwischen Desktop-Anwendungen (wie z.B. Office-Programmen) und Web Applikationen, die direkt im Browser gestartet werden können, zu schliessen. Wirtschaftsanalysten prognostizieren für die kommenden Jahre einen Boom im RIA-Sektor. Gleichwohl haben sich bislang kaum Schlüsseltechnologien herauskristallisiert und Entwickler sehen sich in der Umsetzung mit einer schier unendlichen Flut an Möglichkeiten konfrontiert, die jeweils mit spezifischen Vor- und Nachteilen aufwarten. Die unabhängige Swiss RIA SIG will vor diesem Hintergrund eine Plattform für den Informations- und Erfahrungsaustausch bieten. Im Fokus stehen dabei RIAs auf Java-Basis, aber auch andere Technologien können Eingang in die Diskussionen finden. “Uns geht es dabei ganz klar um praktische Erfahrungen aus erster Hand und nicht etwa um Verkaufspräsentationen”, so Bruno Schäffer, der zusammen mit Sascha Freitag (Credit Suisse) die Special Interest Group leiten wird.

Das Kick-Off Event der Swiss RIA SIG am 20. Januar 2010, ab 17 Uhr im Technopark Zürich, beschäftigt sich denn auch gleich mit RIAs im praktischen Einsatz:

• Nach einer kurzen Begrüssung durch Bruno Schäffer  spricht zunächst Jürg Stuker (Namics) über “Was Kunden sagen und was Techies meinen” und präsentiert eine Auslegeordnung von Client Code-Erfolgen sowie -Albträumen mit dem Ziel, Projekterfahrungen im RIA-Umfeld weiterzugeben.
• Anschliessend beschäftigt sich Nikolaos Kaintantzis (Zühlke) mit “RIA aus Sicht der Software-Entwicklung” und teilt den oftmals unscharf schillernden Oberbegriff anhand von Anwendungsszenarien und Projektrahmenbedingungen in drei Kategorien auf. Die einzelnen RIA-Kategorien werden mit Produkten aus der Java-Welt veranschaulicht und mit Beispielen aus Projekten illustriert.

Jürg Stuker hat sein Studium der Wirtschaftsinformatik an der Universität Zürich absolviert, war danach in der Informatikleitung bei einem Handelshaus für Rohbaumwolle und nachfolgend Entwicklungsleiter “Neue Technologien” und Projektleiter für Integrationsprojekte bei der Polynorm Software AG. Seit 1999 war er zunächst Partner und  CTO der Namics AG; Seit 2004 ist er CEO im gleichen Unternehmen. The task of the first W-JAX Developer Challenge was to develop a web app betting tool on the 2010 FIFA world cup with a good looking UI, a strong and stable back-end and innovative usability features. The only restriction was that the framework should be running on the JVM. The winner was elected by the conference audience. This year, Canoo Engineering AG won with a prominent margin with CATS (CAnoo TippSpiel), an innovative approach for a web-based betting tool, based on UltraLightClient, Canoo’s proven widget toolkit and framework for creating Rich Internet Applications (RIA) in Java. The core idea of UltraLightClient is to run applications on a centrally controlled application server, like HTML based applications. Only an application-independent Presentation Engine runs on the desktop.

The second edition of Zanichelli’s Italian-German dictionary has been completely revised and updated. Useful tools for language learners were added (collocations, grammatical structures with case information, special features) and special attention was paid to linguistic evolutions; e.g. new (compound) words and expressions in the fields of technological innovations (Fotohandy, simsen), economy (gerechter Handel, Abgeltungssteuer), and social changes (Patchworkfamilie, Multikulti). Über 400 Gäste folgten zusammen mit James Gosling, dem Vater der Java-Programmiersprache, den Vorträgen der drei Finalisten, die durch eine Fachjury unter Beteiligung von Canoo Fellow Dierk König aus Einreichungen aus aller Welt im Vorfeld ausgewählt wurden. In einem spannenden Finale wurden nun die ersten drei Plätze unter Beteiligung des Publikums ausgewählt.

Den Sieg trug schlussendlich João Arthur Brunet Monteiro nach Hause: Seine Präsentation überzeugte sowohl thematisch, aber auch durch seinen sehr natürlichen Auftritt.

„Gerade in Zeiten der allgemeinen Krise muss die europäische IT-Branche den Weg einer proaktiven Nachwuchsförderung einschlagen, um auf dem Weltmarkt bestehen zu können. Daher lag es nahe, Jazoon Rookie zu unterstützen“, so Dr. Hans-Dirk Walter, CEO der Canoo AG. Darüber hinaus ist Canoo mit Dozenten an der ETH Zürich, der Universität Basel und der Fachhochschule Nordwestschweiz vertreten.
